7 Ways Your WhatsApp Conversations Could Be Hacked & How To Protect Yourself

7 Ways Your WhatsApp Conversations Could Be Hacked & How To Protect Yourself

WhatsApp is a popular chat app that has become an invaluable connectivity device in our lives.
However, getting the WhatsApp chats compromised is almost everyone’s worst fear, which you can escape by learning about the techniques that can be used to access WhatsApp chats and take precautionary steps.

Research by Manisha Priyadarshini An Editor and a Tech Journalist with a software development background. I am a big fan of technology and memes. At Fossbytes, I cover all aspects of tech but my specific area of interest is Programming and Development

The Top 7 Ways To Hack WhatsApp Messages

1. By Exploiting Vulnerabilities

By Exploiting Vulnerabilities

Fresh bugs are discovered every now and then that can be used to hack WhatsApp conversations.
The Pegasus voice call attack and remote code execution via GIF are two common WhatsApp vulnerabilities that have caused havoc in the past year.

Hackers were able to gain access to a smartphone using the Pegasus Voice Call assault by making a WhatsApp voice call to their target.
The attack may still succeed even though the target did not answer the phone, and the target would not even be aware that malware has been mounted on their smartphone.

The other flaw included malicious GIFs that permitted attackers to hijack the victim’s WhatsApp chat history when they were accessed by the victim.

While these vulnerabilities have been fixed, there is still the possibility of a new one emerging, as long as unexplained vulnerabilities remain throughout the wild.
As a result, there is still the possibility of a data breach.

Solution:

Always keep the WhatsApp up to date, while the development team continues to release new updates to address those flaws.
And if you haven’t changed WhatsApp in a bit, I strongly advise you to do so immediately!

2. WhatsApp Web

WhatsApp Web is a feature that allows you to use the chat app on a desktop computer.
It allows you to send and receive email, pictures, videos, and files.
Your conversations and media files are completely compatible between your smartphone and desktop devices.
This ensures that any move you take on one of the instruments is mirrored on the other.

This functionality, however, also poses a security danger.
Although you must approve WhatsApp Web on a PC by scanning the QR code on your mobile WhatsApp app, once the desktop computer is enabled, you can access your WhatsApp chats through PC.

So, if you give someone else access to this PC and give them allowed access to your WhatsApp Web account, that person will go to https://web.whatsapp.com https://web.whatsapp.com/ and see all of your chats.

The person will then opt to either export the chats or take screenshots of them, effectively hacking your WhatsApp conversation and violating your privacy.

How to prevent WhatsApp web from being exploited?

Your mobile app will still inform you when your WhatsApp web is active on a screen in the notification panel of your smartphone.
So, if you see the message below, log out of both devices as soon as possible by opening the WhatsApp app on your phone>
WhatsApp Web > More options >WhatsApp Web > Log out from all devices > LOG OUT.

3. Exporting Chat History To Email

Exporting-Chat-History

This method, like the previous one, requires physical access to your device in order to hack WhatsApp chats.

It takes less than a minute to use this tool, and all that is needed is to gain unauthorized access to your device, either by tricking you or leveraging the fact that it was left unlocked.

To export WhatsApp chats, one simply has to open Whatsapp, tap on More Options (top right corner) and select the Export Chat option and send all the chats to an email ID where it can be accessed later on

Solution:

Always lock your computer with a PIN or fingerprint to prevent anyone from listening in on your conversations.
If you must hand over your smartphone to another, make sure you use a WhatsApp app locker to keep it safe.

4. Accessing Your Chat Backups

It’s worth noting that WhatsApp’s network is the only one that offers end-to-end encryption.
This means that if you quit WhatsApp, your conversations are no longer encrypted.

If you’ve enabled Backup Chats and saved a copy of your conversation to Google Drive or iCloud, keep in mind that such files are unencrypted and can be easily accessed by anyone if they hack or gain access to your Gmail or iCloud account.

Solution:

Because of the security threats, I do not advocate storing chat copies in the cloud.
And if you have to do so because you need to backup important messages, I recommend being more cautious about safeguarding your cloud account by using secure passwords and not sharing them with others.

5. Media File Jacking

5. Media File Jacking

WhatsApp encrypts the messages in transit, although this cannot be assured until a media file enters your phone.
Data File Jacking is a flaw in which an attacker exploits the way WhatsApp collects media files such as images and videos to write them to the device’s external storage.

Installing a malicious piece of malware embedded within a seemingly harmless-looking app may be used to perform Media File Jacking.
This malware can be used to keep track of incoming files on WhatsApp.
As a result, anytime a new file is sent, the malware will replace the actual file with a fake file, which may be used to defraud people or simply watch their chats.

solution:

To prevent Media File Jacking on WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chat Settings > Save to Gallery option and turn it Off. This will prevent your WhatsApp chats from getting hacked.

6. Spoofing Method

Spoofing Method

WhatsApp chats can be compromised without physical access to the computer using the Spoofing Method, which makes it risky and impossible to avoid. Although it is a difficult challenge, it is not insurmountable.

The intruder must first determine the target smartphone’s MAC address.
After that, they will use Busy Box and Terminal Emulator on their smartphone to update their device’s Wi-Fi MAC Address to the target device’s address.

They then download WhatsApp and input the target device’s phone number. Then they log in using the authentication code obtained from the target computer. They use the authentication code to log in to the target’s WhatsApp account and then uninstall the code to avoid being detected by the suspect.

One red flag may be that when the hacker signs in, WhatsApp on the victim’s computer logs out. Unfortunately, the harm could already have been done by then.

7. Using Third-Party Spyware

There are a range of cell monitoring apps online, such as EvaSpy or Spyzie, that have been designed specifically to track WhatsApp and other messaging apps. For this approach to function, someone must physically enter your phone and install the software, as well as allow access to monitor your chats.

Extra functions include listening to live surroundings, screen capture, keylogging, camera monitoring, snapshots, and recording conversations in each of these spy applications.

You can also take it a step further and use Spyware to secretly hack WhatsApp chats. POCWAPP and WSP 3.0 – WhatsApp Scan Pro are two well-known brands.
These applications are paid and only available on the DarkNet, so they aren’t often used, but that doesn’t negate the fact that such technologies exist that can compromise your privacy.

Solution:

To avoid being a victim of spyware malware, avoid downloading apps from unknown sources and keep an eye on the software you have installed on your devices.
If you see any apps that you haven’t installed or that are acting strangely, I suggest uninstalling them right away.
